Spring Cleaning (aka Shopping) March 17, 2010

I am in full swing with my spring cleaning… if by cleaning you mean shopping.  I believe in spring cleaning as far as it extends to lovingly folding my sweaters away for next winter and reviving my wardrobe with some fresh spring picks.  Here’s a peek at what’s on my shopping (and beauty) list for spring.  As I check them off, I’ll fill in the “where to buy” details:

  1. The perfect shade of coral/orange nail polish.  – Rimmel Lasting Finish Pro in Orange Sunset.  Surprisingly shiny.
  2. I want to dye my hair red.  (I’m obsessed with Grace’s hair from the Mentalist.)
  3. Cropped safari jacket  Amazing Steal!  Forever 21, $15.  I get endless compliments on this jacket.  It makes absolutely everything look “this season”.  Next outfit… olive green mini dress with this jacket and black booties.
  4. Lace up booties
  5. Anything lavender
  6. White skinny jeans
  7. White boyfriend blazer – Amazing Steal! Target (Merona) for only $29, complete with pinstripe lining for rolling up your sleeves.  I have a very long torso and small bust, and I have endless trouble finding blazers.  I’m getting this one taken in a teeny bit in the body, but I’m still blown away by the cut and the price.
  8. Striped tees, aviator shades, wrap hoodies, anything that I could wear on a yacht in a JCrew ad.

Nothing says summer like neon.  My current obsession is the oval neon bags from Proenza Schouler.  They’re compact, but will still function as an everyday bag… but with a little more sass.  I love the versatility of the shoulder strap and the shorter hand strap.  Plus, they’re just fun.  This is my pick for everyone who loves bright colors and celebrating summer!

Frey WilleVienna is for lovers.  Jewelry lovers, that is.  Frey Wille is the best thing to come out of Austria sinceFrey WilleVienna Sausages (?!  Ok, maybe he’s best thing to come out of Vienna period).  His jewelry can truly be considered an art.  On first glance, his colorful enamel creations look like Vera Bradley and Banana Republic teamed up for a new project.  The fanciful patterns and bold styles are reminiscent of the mod designs of the 60’s, but also take on a vintage feel, especially with the Venise collection.  You’ll fall in love instantly if your look is bohemian or preppy.

Frey Wille has a global and cultural focus, including collections inspired by history from all over the world, like the Poseidon and Sphinx collections.  These mythical elements only add to the fun.  Frey WilleFrey Wille

I Shop, Therefore I Am January 17, 2010

I just discovered Vivre.com and I’ve spent hours looking at absolutely EVERYTHING.  Its extremely unique, and sometimes random collections remind me of an upscale Anthropologie.  Looking through the website is like discovering the exquisite pieces from a lifetime of world travels in an archaeologist’s home.

The collection of jewelry completely blows my mind.  I’ve never seen so many unique pieces.  If you’re stumped for a gift for anyone, this is the place to go.  I also love the home decor section and the library category.  This website is the antidote to a cookie cutter shopping experience.  If standing out from the crowd is your fashion mantra, you’ll be right at home here.

The shop boasts some of my favorite designers, like Matthew Williamson and Aurelie Bidermann.  This is the perfect place to find fun travel items, scarves, unique home accessories, and anything else you might be searching for.

Fashion Predictions for Spring

GlamourIt was a rainy Saturday morning, and I had some good coffee, a White Collar marathon to watch, and a pile of the new February magazines.  I was lost to the world, and a very happy girl.

February is typically a transition from winter to spring, which means you can find anything from sweaters to bathing suits in stores and magazines.  Designers and stores are gearing up for warmer weather and brighter colors, even though the weather still calls for boots and furry accessories.

In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, this is the season to show love to your entire wardrobe.  Mix up your winter and spring pieces to stay current, but warm too.  My favorite right now:  a flowery, flowy dress with a soft cardigan and boots.  Also, try your plaid button down with a sweater vest and tweed shorts.  Mixing up your lighter spring fabrics with your wool and tweeds from winter gives a nice combination of textures, the perfect cure for a boring winter uniform.

Essie Neo WhimsicalI predict that Spring 2010 will see the comeback of pastels.  They’ve been relegated to bad Easter outfits and the AARP crowd for a few years, but they’re back, and they’re fresh.  My pick:  lilac.  I celebrated spring by picking up Essie’s Neo Whimsical, which sums up this year’s take on pastels.  Fresh, flirty, and innocent, but with a new edge.  Even your favorite Uggs will be lightening up for spring with a fun, new lilac shade

On that note, let me add that purple has been in for what, 5 seasons now?  If you haven’t gotten the memo yet, go get some purple!  There are shades that flatter every skin tone, and this gem of a color will be your best friend year round.Bailey Button Ugg

Neons will come in a close second to pastels as the must have colors for spring and summer.  There is no better way to perk yourself up after a dreary winter than some bright colors.  Juicy Couture’s line of accessories feature bright yellows, greens, blues, and pinks.

Bottega Veneta Intrecciato Clutch AppleStructure will still play a big role in the coming seasons, especially in accessories.  I fell in love with the bright yellow oval clutch from Ferragamo in InStyle this month, but sadly, I can’t find a picture of it anywhere.  I’ll keep my eyes peeled.  I also love Bottega Veneta’s Intrecciato Clutch in Apple.

Balmain struck the perfect pitch least season with its structured blazers and military jackets.  Balmain Structured BlazerPhotos have shown up in magazine after magazine for month after month and they’re so gorgeous I’m still not tired of looking at them.  A structured blazer is a fantastic transition piece that will go with your sundresses as well as your wool trousers.  Have a couple structured go-to pieces and you’ll always look put together and polished, even if you grabbed your blazer on the way out the door.  I’m on the lookout for a white blazer for summer this year.

Fergie RenegadeGood news for you tough chic gals, gladiator sandals are not going away.  There are even more styles and colors to choose from, so you still can’t go wrong with some serious straps and studs.  Lighten them up for spring by choosing a lighter neutral, like gray, cream, or mushroom, like Fergie’s Renegade (left).  Can’t wait til summer?  They’ll still look great with tights right now.

Long shoulder bags are the new clutch, like the 3.1 Phillip Lim bags I’ve seen everywhere except Google images.  (What is up with that anyway?  There are a billion pictures on the internet, but somehow Google still can’t keep up with my insatiable need for new fashion…)  I love these tiny bags because they are perfect for everything, from an outdoor concert to a party dress, but they don’t take up one of your hands.Hollister Seagrove Jacket

Last but not least, punk rock lives on.  On my shopping list for spring is a studded jean jacket.  I used to be morally opposed to jean jackets (remember the square versions from the early nineties?  shudder…)  D&G and Hollister are among the many to bring the jean jacket into the new decade with slim cuts and fun embellishments.

Spring is all about fun colors and feminine details this year.  Its a time to reinvent your look and shake up your style.  Break out the florals and ruffles and enjoy the warm weather!

Urban Outfitters Over Plaid Diamond Tights

Urban Outfitters Over Plaid Diamond Tights

Winter fashion is so much fun.  I love wearing my coats, boots, scarves, hats, and mittens.  Another one of my favorite winter accessories is tights.  I love to wear dresses, even in the winter.  Tights are actually warmer than some of my dress pants for work.

Basic black can be a little boring, but printed tights can be scary.  I’ve been on the hunt for something in between, a little more interesting than just black, but still polished and appropriate.

My rule of thumb is to think more along the lines of pattern than print (although there are some floral prints below for the more daring).  Patterned tights usually stick to one color, which is much more elegant than bright colors.  Usually, you can only see the pattern up close, which makes them more attractive than attention-grabbing.

My favorite patterns are a pointelle or a chevron stripe.  They don’t look to childish or too inappropriate.  Patterned tights can run the gamut from little girl (think white or pink or brightly colored floral prints) to adult entertainment (large fishnets, mesh, etc).  Go for patterns on more opaque tights (as opposed to very sheer hosiery) to stay classy, not trashy.

A few of my favorites, from left:  Pointelle Tights, Forever 21; X Pattern Hosiery, StockinGirl.com; Vintage Roses, Stockingirl.com; Celeste Stein for Dillards; Cable Knit Tights, StockinGirl.com; Argyle Tights, Betsey Johnson.

Victoria Had a BFF Too

When I was little, my best friend and I LOVED to make friendship bracelets.  We would braid for hours on end.  We even had books on how to create fancy designs.  We thought this was a cool, new trend, but in reality, the concept of friendship jewelry is very old.

In the Victorian days, friends (and even lovers) expressed their feelings through jewelry.  The Regard ring was very popular.  The ring contains a Ruby, Emerald, Garnet, Amethyst, Ruby, and Diamond, in that order.  The initials of the names of the stones spell out “regard”.

Regard Ring

Another popular ring featured a Diamond, Emerald, Amethyst, Ruby, Emerald, Sapphire, and Topaz to spell out “dearest”.  These rings were even used as engagement rings in Victorian England.  Many modern jewelry designers have fashioned their own take on the Regard Engagement ring.  Places like The London Victorian Ring Co will help you create your own design, spelling out a name or other message with the various stones they have available.

The London Victorian Ring Co describes them as “Original Designs from a Stylish Era”.  These would make great gifts for your friend who obsessed with Jane Austen novels.

Thanks to Mad Men, the ’50s and ’60s are back.  Now you can get that vintage look without scouring vintage shops for finds still in decent shape.  One of my favorite pieces is this nubby wool tweed chain link evening bag.  This vintage look makes you look and feel like a lady, while still keeping up with modern trends like the chain strap bag.

You can recreate the whole look with a pencil skirt, a cardigan, and some pumps, or reach for this bag in your leather jacket and jeans.  You can never go wrong with an elegant accessory.
